The Zombie Apocalypse is, of course, a metaphor for the end of civilaization as we know it as a result of any of a number of circumstances, including nuclear war, EMP, natural disaster, disease, war, etc.  We think it very unlikely that the actual end of civilization will come about as a direct result of zombies, but it makes it more fun to talk about.
